Sat 8th, April, 2006

My name is......

Up at 4.30am, at Newcastle airport at 5am and on the plane by 9am, Ok.... got to Paris at about 11am and probably arrived at the Hotel Concorde La Fayette around 12.30pm, first things first registration.... The Paris Marathon requires each runner to have identification to make sure people don't pass on there numbers, the big question is whether we can pass as a 48 year old German called Georg Michael and a 28 year old French lad called Philippe, our race numbers came from ebay as we had missed the entry end date by about 6 months, doh....

Success!! time for pasta party number 3.............

8.30pm

Had the tried and tested 8 units of lantus, with the experience from the previous two marathons will be expecting glucose levels to be just as good....

Photo Finish....

5.45am

Sugar level 4.6 mmol/l

7.20am

My level 9.1 mmol/l Mikes 5.6 mmol/l

8.53am

My level 4.7 mmol/l, Mikes 5.2 mmol/l start of the race, if all goes well will have one SIS Isotonic GO Gel every hour, I have found that they work really, you don't need water with them and they don't cause your blood glucose to spike:)

10.00am

My level 6.2 mmol/l Mikes 5.1 mmol/l, one hour into the race, just following the plan one gel

10.59am

My level 6.3 mmol/l Mikes 4.4 mmol/l, seems to be working pretty well maintaining sugar level,

12.09pm

The last 3 miles of a marathon are by far the worst, especially in this case. The last 5 km are in the park and the entrance and exit are so close you can see other runners exiting, making it look pretty close when in fact its a good half an hours run through the park before returning to the Champs Ellesse and the impending finish line, so Mike went into silent mode, I tried the motivation talk but eventually found shouting got the best results.... you could tell the constant nagging was working and it all culminated in the finishing straight with Mike bursting into a sprint, finishing in a Georg/Phillippe photo finish in a time of 3hrs 51mins, Mike deserved the honors, my level 3.9 mmol/l, Mikes level 8.6 mmol/l, but high there Mike, Lol!

3.46pm

My level 5.7 mmol/l Mikes level 6.7 mmol/l

7.25pm

My level 3.4 mmol/l, having finished the marathon we had too go straight to the airport with time only for a kebab and a victory can, the flight home took just 1hr 15mins to Newcastle Airport, sitting on the Metro train having just finished the Paris marathon a few hours previous was a an unusually good feeling, what a day..... 10.47pm level 8.7 mmol/l, only 4 days too Edinburgh....

3 Down.... 2 too go!
