Diabetic on the Team

A SUPER-FIT diabetic celebrated his 21st birthday in style - by winning the chance to represent Great Britain in a major triathlon championship.

Gary Blakie, of Weardale Avenue, Sunderland, will be flying out with the GB team to the World Age Group Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii, in October after he came in the top eight at the national event in Ashford, Kent, on July 17.

The Northumbria University graduate was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 12-years-old but has overcome the condition to compete successfully in the sport.

Since he was 14, he has made it his business to learn how he can control his blood sugar levels.

Gary said "Ashford was one of the biggest races of my life and it was such a fantastic feeling to win."

"I am so excited to be flying out to Hawaii and meeting the professionals as well as the other amateurs."

"It's not about the medals, it's about the feeling of competing for Britain and knowing that I've achieved all of this despite diabetes"

Gary's mother Dorothy, 52, a former midwife, and father Eric, 52, a retired businessman, are now planning to booking flight tickets to watch their son compete.
